Top reviews from the United States
I am a plumber in a major US city. For most days of the week, my backpack is solely used to carry my personal effects. Chargers, Medicine, headphones, etc. On some day ill load some tools in my backpack so I can take public transportation.
For this reason storage space was a big concern for me. I need to carry a lot of stuff. I read one review where someone figured they can put two one-gallon jugs inside the bag comfortably. For this review, i did exactly that. The first image I uploaded was my best attempt as flattening the large pocket out so you can see. The second was with two one-gallon containers inside. Third is all the stuff I can comfortably fit in the bag (The black semi-rigid case is almost the size of a gallon). and fourth is the bag loaded with the stuff from picture number three. The second pocket can comfortably hold anything ~2.5"-3" thick without stretching. And the front two pockets ~.75" There is a laptop pocket which I never use. But its padded on both sides and although the bottom of the whole bag is lightly padded the padding in the laptop pocket is sewed together on the bottom. Meaning the bottom of the laptop pocket kinda has extra padding for it.
My second concern was durability. The main material and reinforced bottom seem very sturdy (No rips tears or pealing). It's clear they put a lot of thought when designing this bag. With other backpacks I've owned the first thing to go were always compliant plastic parts. Think clips hanger etc. This bag is almost completely devoid of them. The clip inside the from pockets is brass. There is no velcro and there are no elastic bands and minimal fish netting. There are plastic strap slides but considering that brass slide strap doesn't work very well and tend to damage the strap I think they made the right call. Furthermore, the slides they did use are thicker and bigger than the ones on my other backpacks. So basically Carhartt replaced all the things that often go wrong with more durable parts and materials. I'm confident this bag will last a long time.
There are some downsides to this bag. I was aware when i made my purchase but i figured I'd modify the bag to my specifications. The first and most obvious ones are the very small water bottle pockets! I know that they made it this way because they didn’t want to use elastic banding and fish netting like other bags do (Including their lower-tier bags). For me, a nice ball of thread around the zipper did the trick for me. It holds my water bottle in place. i should add that the bottle is a 1.5L bottle of water.
Second is the daisy chain that bag makers add to their bags. I carry a lot of my stuff in organized kits. It allows me to unpack and repack quickly. I can quickly tell if something is missing. Things like cables and chargers last longer etc. It also allows me to add carabiners to my kits and hold them outside of my bag in the event that i had to load my bag to capacity. Happens rarely but it's super convenient. A lot of times they sewed to the back of the backpack. On this Carhartt they put them on the shoulder straps. This is not exclusive to them but it is not done this way as often. And although it works great for things like hand sanitizer (I know this review will be here for a long time but I'm writing this in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic.) it makes it uncomfortable to carry larger things like my headphones case and etc. I took photos of the daisy chain and these two items.
Also because this bag lacks compliant parts (Like those snap clips) the bag doesn't have a sternum, hip, or compression strap. Meaning when you are wearing the bag when it's empty it moves around a lot. And when its fully loaded the bag will put more stress on your shoulders than a bag that has them. I should add that the curved shoulder straps are comfortable even when the bag is heavy. So its not that big a deal
Last No Lash Tab! No gear loop! This bag doesn't have the patch so you can clip on a light. I guess you can put it on the grab handle or maybe sew one on your self but either way you're going to have to modify the bag.
Some other notes:
Carhartt adds a coating that stops the backpack from getting wet quickly. it works but under sustained rain it will get soaked. I have yet to find a puddle on the bottom of the backpack or get the contents of the bag properly wet.
When I made my purchase the grey version of this backpack didn't exist. For this reason, I choose this color. it matches my pants and hides dust better than a black backpack (Think plaster dust).
All the metallic bits are made of brass. Brass corrodes/get a patina when exposed to moisture. So all those bright gold looking rivets and zippers will become darker brown blue-greenish. This was expected and NBD to me but I figured id let yall know.
I washed the bag prior to taking these photos. I figured the dirt I added would be an unfair representation of the state of the bag.
My expectations: I expect this bag to last a long long time. My guess is improbably going to stain it in such a way that I won't want to use it before the bag fails. But until I get to that point I'm probably going to modify it. Add a ring to more positively affix my water bottle. Add a lash tab and some daisy chains to the back. Probably remove the sunglasses pocket. The cool part IMO about this bag is that it makes a great base for you to make it to your own specifications.
Finally: I always update my reviews when something happens. So long as there aren't any edit below here you can assume that the bag is still in good shape. if it tears or breaks or something down the line I will let yall know.
Thank you for reading! And if you find this helpful you know what to do. Thanks
I’m hard on my work bags , I depend on them to be sturdy and hold all my stuff without carrying a huge bag! It’s pretty weighted down too.
I’ve had this for about 3 months now and it’s still like BRAND NEW!!
The stitching is extremely tight and durable. Zippers are strong and smooth. Pockets are roomy! The little pocket on the top between the 2 bigger pockets, word so well for holding my name tag, and all the things I transfer to uniform pockets. The back pocket is padded for a laptop or IPad , great for holding folders and papers you don’t want bent. Large side pockets. The large pocket on the front unzips all the way around and a netted pocket for items, toiletries and what not. The bottem zip pocket on the front has a few pockets inside that, that holds all my electronics /ph chargers , cables , mouse , ear buds ect.. I don’t think I’ll need a new bag for quite some time!! Well worth the $$ spent on it. And true to the Carhart name, the canvas material is strong! Double stitching on the seams. Good bottem on the bag.
I haven’t had to clean it, but I imagine it would wash well enough in the washing machine on a cold water setting.
You can’t go wrong on the ID bag, it’s stylish and sturdy, and even loaded full… it’s easy to carry!
Again… well worth the money!!

I liked the size of the backpack and the various compartments and pockets and I needed something to haul a 17" laptop and most bags only fit up to a 15", as well as various files, document and papers for work. I also tend to bring a lunch to work with me and several small portable hard drives depending on which work I am doing on any given day (even though I am supposed to be retired).
First the pros of the bag;
- good size, will fit a 17" laptop in the one compartment, snug, but it does fit.
- It has 3 main compartments including one for the laptop.
- the middle compartment has lots of room for papers, files, lunch containers, a pair of shoes, clothes or whatever else you want to put in there.
- The front one has a small pencil case type mesh pocket in it, good to hold pens, markers, sticky notes, etc. It also has 2 sleeves within the main pocket. I use them for a couple of small hard drives that I use for work. They are separated from the slot for file folders, note book - or other items. It also has room in front of the 2 sleeves for other items - I have a large hard drive that is loaded with movies and music which I take when I travel for work and want to have some entertainment rather than trying to find something on local TV.
- There is also has a small pocket on the top of the middle compartment for sunglasses, accessible from the outside of the bag which is kind of handy.
- There are 2 zippered pockets on the side for water bottles, gloves, wet-wipes, or whatever you can think to put in them. They'll easily hold a 500 - 750 ml bottle (depending on size and shape) and no real worries of it falling out and if small enough - you can zipper it closed.
- there are 2 zippered pockets on the front of the bag, the bottom one has a couple of small storage pockets inside including an envelope sized pocket , a key clip, and a couple of elastic straps to hold pens, markers or small "tube-like" items - lip balm maybe??
- The bag seems to be well made with strong stitching and zippers.
- the material seems to be fairly heavy and durable, and has an abrasion resistant section on the bottom, but it doesn't cover the whole bottom.
The cons;
- the interior sleeves/pockets would be better served if they had a flip down top or cover that snapped or velcro'd into place to hold any items from popping out if the bag lays on its side or is jostled.
- the shoulder straps seem to be a bit short (I'm 6' and 220lbs) and it would be nice if there was a sternum strap between the shoulder straps to help stabilize the bag - but that's not a deal breaker and one could easily be created if you really want one - which I will probably will be doing in the next few weeks.
- the bottom of the laptop pocket could have a little more padding on the bottom to help protect the laptop when you set the bag down - for me a small thin strip of closed cell foam and it's good.
- The description says it is water repellent - not wanting to take chances I will likely be coating it with a waterproofing spray like scotch-guard or similar and if I have to venture out in the wet - I'll have a waterproof cover or waterproof bags inside to hold things.
Overall I like the size and look of the bag and time will tell how durable it will be. and I am hoping that it stands up to daily use for the long term as spending $140 for a bag isn't something i want to repeat 2 or 3 times a year.
I carry a 14" notebook, a 15" work station, a tablet, folders, cables, etc. The reason i purchased this was because my last backpack had a sling tear off due to the loaded weight. This Carhartt is a superior pack.
